A brand-new, private, 4-stall English pleasure barn in the beautiful Litchfield Hills of Connecticut.
Job Description
Seeking a full-time experienced, enthusiastic, and responsible Groom /Barn Manager responsible for providing care for up to 4 horses.

The ideal person will be a hands-on, proactive, detail-oriented professional who enjoy outdoors in a safe and clean environment. He/she will work together with other property staff, have a positive attitude, possess the ability to prioritize, and take initiative. Individual must truly enjoy taking care of horses and be proactive in all areas.

This position is ideal for someone looking for a change from the atmosphere of a show/school barn and who desires a quieter and friendly work environment. We are a no-smoking and no-vaping, tobacco, drug, and alcohol-free environment. Salary is DOE and includes nearby living accommodations. Accepting resumes only for this position.

Job duties include but not limited to:

• Responsible for setting up and maintaining an electronic daily calendar for veterinarian, vendor appointments.
• Maintaining the barn, picking and cleaning stalls, pastures, and riding areas - sweeping, washing, and general cleaning. Also scheduling and organizing a twice-yearly, complete barn power washing/detail cleaning.
• Providing hay, feed, rations, supplements, medications and water, including refilling; daily cleaning of buckets and tubs used in the feeding process.
• Keeping horses well trained and exercised daily, including hand walking, lunging, and turnouts.
• Daily horse bathing, sheet and blanket changing, and hoof picking.
. Manage and conduct night-checks.
• Groom and tack horses for the owners to ride; warm up and cool down if needed.
• Laundry of horse gear and cleaning all horse leathers and tack.
• Administering first aid to horses as needed.
• Following instructions and directions from the trainer, farrier, veterinarian, and/or other equine care providers; escort by foot or drive vendors around the property.
• Keeping horse coats (including face, legs, ears) clean and trimmed in all seasons.
• Communicating to the owners and/or Estate Manager in a timely manner any animal injuries, changes in behavior, or potential hazards.
• Monitoring and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of feed, hay, and bedding; ordering supplies as necessary. Store hay and shavings after inspecting for mold or other quality issues.
• Handling horses and assisting the veterinarian, farrier, or trainer during medical or other treatments.
• Supervise and/or conduct arm and property maintenance and repairs.
• Working with and operating small and large farm equipment.
Job Requirements
• Preference for 5 years’ experience as a Barn Manager or 10 years as a Professional Groom. Vet technician or comparable experience, other professional certification is a plus.
• Professional and service-oriented, positive attitude, with proven record of taking initiative and ability to prioritize.
• Experience with operating farm equipment (i.e. tractors, compost spreaders, lawnmowers, etc.)
• Basic mechanical skills required: barn operating systems, walker, irrigation, wells.
• Willing and able to do minor emergency repairs and other tasks as needed.
• Team player, hands-on attitude is extremely important.
• Fluency of the English language; must have good written/verbal communication skills.
• Experience in coordinating and managing vendors.
• Must be able to work weekends and some holidays.
• Administrative and computer skills a plus.
• Must be discreet re: the privacy and needs of the family; must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.
• Willing to undergo a comprehensive background and reference check.
• Legal to work in the U.S. with valid driver’s license.
