About The Facility
Sweet Briar’s 130-acre Rogers Riding Center ranks among the best in the country on a college campus. Indoor and outdoor facilities include: The 120' by 300' Robin S. Cramer Hall, one of the largest indoor college arenas in the nation, has a heated viewing area and sound system; three spacious outdoor rings, one with sprinklers and lights; covered lunging area; several teaching and schooling fields with a variety of natural obstacles; hunter-jumper fences suitable for USEF competitions. Facilities include: 80 large box stalls with rubber mats; 45 well-mannered college-owned horses -- warm bloods, thoroughbreds, quarter horses, and several cross-breeds; four wash racks with hot and cold running water; five tack rooms; 20 individual paddocks and 10 large pastures for turnout.
Job Description
Position Summary: This job provides care for horses under the guidelines of the Equine Program. Performs skilled tasks needed to maintain the facilities of the Harriet Howell Rogers Riding Center. Supervises student workers engaged in similar activities involving the maintenance of the facility and the care of the horses as needed.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, 12-month position, flexible schedule to include weekends. Typically, five days a week 7 am to 4 pm with one-hour lunch break with rotating weekend shifts. Summer hours may be 6 am to 3 pm depending on weather.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Assists with supervising and training of student workers.
Essential Responsibilities
• Care for horses to protect their health and improve their appearance
• Feeding and watering horses, managing supplements, basic equine first aid
• Bring in and turnout horses
• Cleans and beds stalls as needed
• Keep facility neat and clean at all times
• Maintains facility equipment and vehicles, keeps service records, performs or schedules preventative maintenance
• Maintains records and charts
• Uses tractor with attachments to perform various field, arena and grounds maintenance
• Perform landscaping duties such as weed removal, planting, mowing, shoveling walks and driveways, and some light carpentry and facility repairs
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have previous experience with horses and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with training..
• High school diploma and minimum 2 years’ experience handling horses.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Must demonstrate competency in verbal and written English skills
• Must be competent in general math.
• Must take pride in and be thorough in quality of work produced; must be able to use general office equipment including office PC, copier, telephone, facsimile machine, etc.;
• Must be able to use farm equipment and attachments; knowledge of power tools;
• Knowledge of safety practices, precautions and occupational hazards associated with equine work;
• Knowledge of basic equine first aid.
• Must possess excellent attention to details;
• Must be a team player and interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Vet Tech Certificate
• Experience operating a tractor.
Physical Demands:
• Must be able to spend prolonged periods of time working in a dusty environment; able to reach,
• Able to frequently lift up to 80 pounds
• Must be able to reach and retrieve objects 5’6” high.
• Fitness and coordination must allow the applicant to safely control horses of all sizes, ages, and behavior types.
• Must be able to hear and make self-heard by co-workers and other constituencies;
• Must be able to see to process work that the position is responsible for completing;
• Must be able to work under deadlines and with constant interruptions.
Work Environment: This position is at an Equine Facility. Employees must work in all temperatures and weather conditions with exposure to animals, hay, dust and a combination of indoor and outdoor work. The environment is very dusty.
